You should have head hair to be able to have a hair drug test performed. If you do not have head hair, many of our facilities will take body hair from the arms or legs. Our hair testing is offered through Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp. Quest facilities will cut head hair or body hair. LabCorp facilities will only cut head hair.
Hair testing for drugs is the only drug testing method available that provides up to a 90-day lookback period. Hair testing provides a longer detection window and can lead to a higher positivity rate, compared to urinalysis, making it an excellent deterrent of drug use. The typical length of head hair tested is 1½ inches from the root end. Since the average growth rate of human head hair is approximately ½ inch (1.3 cm) per month, a hair analysis covers an approximate 90-day time frame. This time frame is an approximation only since an individual's actual hair growth rate may vary from the average.

It's very hard to cheat on a hair drug test. Every collection is observed. All hair samples are washed prior to screening and confirmation analysis to remove external contamination. The laboratory is actually testing for drug metabolites that are embedded into the hair shaft. We have not found any adulterants that can beat the test at this time. Moreover, the risk is minimized because every collection is directly observed.
The testing process for hair produces accurate hair drug test results. Hair samples are first screened in our laboratory using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) methodology, which has been proven reliable for routine drug testing. Any samples that test presumptively positive in the screening process are then subjected to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS), or liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) confirmation testing.
